The Power of “Dis”

The word “dis” often signals separation, removal, or reversal.

To disappoint is to remove hope. To disarm is to remove defense. To disrespect is to remove honor. To disaffirm is to remove validation. To disallow is to remove permission. To disapprove is to remove acceptance.

When we slow down and look at it this way, we realize something powerful:

So much emotional harm comes from what is taken away.

Validation. Safety. Encouragement. Connection. Belonging.

And sometimes if we’re honest we are the ones doing the removing.
